A visual essay seems to me to be the best, catchphrase definition of the nature of the Southwest project, which I consider to be the most significant among my works to date. A photographic and literary narrative with the ambition of a cultural study, describing a journey through the American Southwest, is arranged in this form.
I selected the characteristic places, landmarks and outlying areas that I visited and described through extensive research on sources of diverse provenance and cultural significance. These sources are included in the bibliography of the book Southwest - edited by me and published by the Publishing House of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, which is the summary of the project. In addition to my essayistic account, the monograph brings together texts by my invited authors: Jakub Woynarowski and Aleksandra Goral, with 35 photographs of places and objects located in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada. These include the desert settlement of Slab City, the official World Centre, the White Sands nuclear training ground, trailer and camper camps inhabited by excluded people, monumental structures lying on the lands of the Navajo people, the crash site of an unidentified flying vehicle near Roswell, abandoned motels along Route 66 and many others. These sites are the points of a topographical narrative grid that, taken as a whole, provides a study of the area described.
The photographs comprising the Southwest series were first presented in October 2018 at a solo exhibition included in the programme of events accompanying the 10th Polish Graphics Triennale in Katowice.
The book was promoted and presented on 7 December 2021 during the author's lecture entitled Erroneous Strategies delivered in the space of the main audiovisual hall of the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice. A promotional article was published in the 5th issue of Restart Quarterly (ASP in Krakow) in spring 2022.
The book Southwest was nominated for an award in the 62nd Polish Society of Book Publishers' Competition Most Beautiful Polish Books 2021 in the albums category. The competition attracted 106 publishing companies, which submitted 203 titles developed by Polish authors of the book form.
